MetroAtlanta announces a new community awareness program titled "Save the Penumbra ? Know the Signs of Stroke".

Date:  2003-08-18

MetroAtlanta Ambulance Service is proud to announce a new community awareness program titled ?Save the Penumbra?Know the Signs of Stroke?. The program is designed to educate those in our community about the risk factors, signs and symptoms of stroke.

The campaign is the brainchild of Marcy Dodd and Gail Cannon. Marcy and Gail along with Mary Martha Sloan, BeBe Redmond and Billy Moody attended the ?Improving the system of Care for Stroke: Next Steps? seminar in June of 2003. The seminar covered the importance of community awareness and education on stroke. Marcy and Gail decided they were going to do something with what they had learned and came up with the idea for this campaign.

MetroAtlanta?s own Ryan J. Lee has designed a bumper sticker with our campaign slogan and the stickers are currently being printed. They will be available to all employees and placed in our ambulances so that everyone can help spread the word and hopefully make people ask the question, ?What is a Penumbra?? The stickers will have our web-site address on them for people to go to learn more about Strokes. Once they get there they will find easy to understand information on the risk factors, signs and symptoms for stroke and what to do for a patient that might be having a stroke.

We hope to have the ?Save the Penumbra?Know the Signs of Stroke? campaign in full swing by September 1, 2003. Anyone interested in helping out with education classes or by proudly displaying one of the bumper stickers, please contact Marcy Dodd or Gail Cannon. We hope to visit some of the local senior centers and other events to help increase the importance of Stroke Awareness.
