Paulding County School Nurses Receive Critical Training to “Stop the Bleed”

Hiram, GA The Stop the Bleed project is a national awareness campaign intended to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.  WellStar Paulding Hospital Emergency Department and MetroAtlanta Ambulance Service professionals partnered to teach school Nurses from the Paulding County School System about the Stop the Bleed project.

MetroAtlanta Ambulance Service Vice President Devan Seabaugh stated, “The Stop the Bleed project includes training we hope these school nurses never have to use but it will build confidence in dealing with a situation of significant blood loss if it presents and taking immediate and appropriate actions could be the difference between life and death”.

Thirty-five school nurses attended the training hosted at WellStar Paulding Hospital.  Instructors from WellStar Paulding Hospital and MetroAtlanta Ambulance Service trained the participants on using current bleeding control techniques such as direct pressure, hemostatic dressings and use of tourniquets.  Each participate received a first aid kit with hemostatic dressings and tourniquets at the end of the training session courteous of WellStar Health System and the Georgia Office of Homeland Security.

MetroAtlanta Ambulance’s Paulding County Operations Manager and Stop the Bleed Instructor Karen Robinson stated, “A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to stop blood loss as quickly as possible and we are training these Nurses how to use the supplies in the first aid kits being provided.  These Nurses will be at the side of these patients within a minute or two of being notified that someone is injured and their quick actions to control any severe bleeding will definitely make a difference in the outcome of the patient.”

Stop the Bleed was launched at a White House event to provide bystanders of emergency situations with the tools and knowledge to stop life threatening bleeding. The goal of this initiative is to ensure that the general public will have access to the proper training and tools needed to provide critical life-saving care.  WellStar Health System and MetroAtlanta Ambulance Service proudly supports Stop the Bleed and its effort to promote access to bleed control kits in public spaces, while traveling, and at home.
