EMS Levels and Their Scope of Practice:
EMT-R: Emergency Medical Technician – Responder
This level provides basic patient stabilization, which would include basic airway management and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) if required. Individuals licensed at this level will assist with patient assessment, packaging and loading/unloading. This level individual is also primarily responsible for safely operating the vehicle in both emergency and non-emergency modes when responding to and transporting patients.
EMT: Emergency Medical Technician
In addition to all the skills and treatments the EMT-R level can do, Individuals at this level may also utilize airway devices to help maintain an open airway, as was as CPAP devices. Additionally, this level can utilize electronic assessment tools such as Non-invasive blood pressure measuring tools, Blood Glucose measurement devices, and Pulse Oximetry tools. Individuals licensed at this level will assist with patient assessment, packaging and loading/unloading, and can assist patients taking their own medication. This level individual can provide ongoing care to a patient in the patient compartment while the patient is being transported to the appropriate facility. This level individual is also responsible for safely operating the vehicle in both emergency and non-emergency modes when responding to and transporting patients.
EMT-I: Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate
In addition to all the skills and treatments the EMT is permitted to do, individuals at this level may also establish Intravenous (IV’s) and give some medications like Dextrose to rescue diabetic patients from hypoglycemia.
AEMT: Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
Advanced EMT’s may do all the skills and treatments of the EMT-I level, but they can also do suctioning for patients with a tracheostomy, utilize electronic equipment for monitoring End-Tidal Co2 measurements, give some medication via the intramuscular route, give breathing treatments to patients with wheezing, and give narcotic antagonist drugs for respiratory emergencies.
Paramedic
The Paramedic level is the highest initial education level recognized and licensed by the State. They can do all the skills and treatments the AEMT can, as well as provide cardiac monitoring, cardiac defibrillation, and advanced airway interventions. Additionally, they can provide emergency airways, chest needle decompressions, and administer numerous medications that can treat pain, cardiac emergencies, airway emergencies, seizure disorders, and other life-threatening conditions. They can also identify stroke and heart attack patients in the field, alert the receiving hospital, and treat the patients on the way to definitive care.

Full time employees have the opportunity to advance their level of EMS licensure by attending courses at the accredited MetroAtlanta EMS Academy tuition free. Course offered at the academy include EMT, AEMT, Paramedic and CCT Paramedic. Certification courses in Healthcare Professional Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support are also available at tuition free. Online Continuing Education is provided so you can complete most mandatory training and license recertification requirements at your pace and on your timeline.
